At Horizon Transport, we take the safety of our drivers seriously. That’s why we have established two easy safety protocols that all of our drivers must follow when making a delivery. INDOT has an entire page of specifically winter driving tips available here. By following these simple protocols, you can help ensure a safe delivery for both yourself and the RV.
Protocol #1: Pre-Trip Inspection
Before you even get behind the wheel, it’s important to do an inspection of the vehicle you’ll be driving. This inspection should include checking the tires, brakes, and lights to ensure that everything is in working order. You should also take a look at the weight distribution of the RV to make sure that it is balanced properly. If anything looks out of place or isn’t working properly, be sure to report it to a supervisor before getting on the road. Not reporting damage found before hitting the road can cost you at the end of your trip. Always report damage that you find in your pre-trip inspection.
Protocol #2: Drive defensively
Once you’re on the road, it’s important to always drive defensively. This means being aware of not only your own actions but also the actions of other drivers around you. If someone cuts you off or tailgates you, don’t engage! Just let them go and focus on getting your delivery to its destination safely. Oftentimes, defensive driving also means being extra cautious in bad weather conditions. If it’s raining or snowing, be sure to take your time and avoid any unnecessary risks.
Watch out for other drivers. Unfortunately, not everyone out there is as focused on safety as we are. So, it’s important to always be aware of your surroundings and watch out for other drivers who may not be following these same safety protocols. If someone else is driving dangerously, give yourself plenty of space, and don’t hesitate to report them to the authorities if necessary.
By following these two easy safety protocols—a pre-trip inspection and defensive driving—you can help ensure a safe delivery for both yourself and the RV. So next time you’re behind the wheel for Horizon Transport, keep these protocols in mind and stay safe out there!
