Flatbed | Haul & Tow Equipment Requirements
Make sure your truck is in compliance with all requirements.
Flatbed
TRUCK
- TRUCK – Presentable 1 ton dually or larger
- INSURANCE – $1,000,000 Unladen Liability Policy (Minimum)
- TRUCK REGISTRATION AND CAB CARD – IRP plate required – Horizon can provide, please contact Compliance
- PRINTER – (Compatible to print for phone/tablet) for daily logs and paperwork
- MIRRORS – Mirror’s that enable a driver to see when pulling a 102-inch wide unit. Mirrors that extend or have mirror extensions
- BRAKE CONTROLLER –Brake control device must be mounted in the cab and fully functional
- FIRE EXTINGUISHER – The fire extinguisher must be mounted and readily accessible. Most DOT interpret this to mean that you have to be able to reach it while in the driver’s seat.
- TRIANGLES – 3 Warning triangles or Flares
- Window Tint – Minimum 70 percent visibility rating installed on the front side windows
- FIFTH WHEEL HITCH – The 5thwheel hitch must be at least a 24k rated hitch and must be mounted to the frame with the proper mounting kit. When your truck is not loaded the 5thwheel height should be 44-46” high.
- DOT INSPECTION – Each driver is required to have a current DOT inspection completed on the truck. They must also carry a copy of the current inspection inside the truck.
- SCALE TICKET – Actual weight of Truck alone
- GVWR – GVWR sticker in the driver’s door jam
- FUSES – A full complement of spare fuses for truck.
- EZ PASS TRANSPONDER – Purchased on the EZPass website by state
- TRUCK BED – Any pick-up truck MUST have the bed REMOVED and replaced with wheel fenders and full mud-flaps per DOT regulations
- PLUGS – Truck must have Seven-Prong electric plug receiver and a Forklift Plug.

TRAILER
- DOT INSPECTION – Each driver is required to have a current DOT inspection completed on the trailer. They must also carry a copy of the current inspection inside the truck. *
- DECK – Equipped with Center rail, and ramps. Deck height must not exceed 36”. *
- PLUGS – Trailer must have a Seven-Prong electric plug and a Forklift Plug receiver. *
- WINCH – Minimum 9,000lb mounted to the trailer. *
- 3 BALL STANDS – Must have 2” 5/16 and 2” balls and pin into the center rail. *
- STRAPS & RATCHETS – Minimum of 12 DOT compliant sets ( to secure 3 four wheeled vehicles) *
- MUDFLAPS – Trailer must have full set mud-flaps behind rear tires. *
- FUSES – Backup fuses for any fuses needed to operate equipment (i.e. Brakes) on the trailer
OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT
- PORTABLE JUMP BOX
- EXTRA LOCKING PINS AND COTTAR PINS
- SMALL RATCHET STRAPS AND BUNGIE CORDS
- PIECE OF 6X6 LUMBER – 12 to 14” long (used to transport wrecked cars missing wheels)
- RAMP EXTENDERS – 2”X10” Lumber, 2 each that are 2’, 3’, and 4’ long (used to extend ramps and level truck/trailer for loading/unloading)

- STRAPS & RATCHETS – Minimum of 4 DOT compliant sets ( to secure 1 four-wheeled vehicle)
- MUDFLAPS – Trailer must have full set mudflaps behind rear tires
- BREAKAWAY BATTERY – Deep cycle marine battery with box
- 1” RATCHET – To secure Breakaway battery to the trailer
- 2 SIX FOOT SAFETY CHAINS – Chains should have hooks on both ends (5/16” or thicker)
- TORQUE WRENCH – 150lb or greater
