What are the characteristics of a 4-wheel drive truck?
In a 4-wheel drive vehicle, there is equal power being exerted into all four of the wheels. Essentially, all four of the wheels are contributing to the movement of the car. When you’re driving a 4wd truck, you’re more in control of the traction your truck is getting against the road.
There are two different types of 4-wheel drive trucks on the market. One is part-time, also called on-demand, meaning that you would have to intentionally turn on the 4-wheel drive. The other is full-time, which means it will automatically turn on in situations where you need it.
What are the benefits?
4-wheel is definitely the preferred choice in climates where you would need extra traction. For example, if you live in an area that gets a lot of snow and ice during the winter, 4-wheel drive is probably the safest option to make sure your vehicle is getting the traction it needs to stay on the road.
Additionally, if you’re hauling an RV or trailer up or downhill, 4-wheel drive will probably be your best bet. These trucks are designed to haul; by having all 4 wheels working to pull weight, your truck will be fighting gravity much harder than a 2-wheel drive.
What are the characteristics of a 2-wheel drive truck?
2-wheel drive either refers to vehicles where the power is exerted on the front wheels to “pull” the vehicle, or back wheels to “push” the vehicle. Basically, there are only two wheels being propelled to actually rotate and move the car; the other two are just moving as a result.
What are the benefits?
The biggest benefit to having a 2wd vehicle is the price. Typically, it’s a much cheaper option than a 4-wheel drive truck. Additionally, these vehicles tend to weigh less, meaning that they get slightly better fuel efficiency. They may not be able to pull their weight (pun intended!) when it comes to hauling, but they’re a cost effective and safe alternative.
